4.56 gears, and around 10 pounds of manifold pressure will be just about right.

I know this is an older thread, but the best budget friendly towing improvement for a 4.8L would be a 5.3 or 6.0 swap. The larger displacement and longer stroke give both the 5.3L and 6.0L a big bump in torque everywhere. I have bought two different 5.3L engines in running condition for $150 or less a piece.
