Default gas gauge problem

My next door nieghbor has a '99 Silverado and his gas gauge has gone nuts. He says that when he fills up that it just gose kinda crazy until it gets about 300 miles on the tank. Then it works just fine. But he will fill up and sometimes it will read full, half, empty and sometimes even jump around like an ohm meter. I'm lost on this one. Any help? Is the sender on the tank or in the line somewhere?

I was hoping it was going to be a little less labor intensive. I told him that's what I thought it may be, but I would ask you guys to see if it could be anything else. Thanks!!

What do you have to do to fix it? My truck has been doing the same thing? Also, how much is the cost?

If you can get the sending unit without the pump, it's less than $200. (Some dealers will tell you that the sending unit and fuel pump only come as one assembly...which is a load of crap. You should be able to get the sending unit alone.

Two ways that I know of to fix it: 1) Drop the gas tank and remove the sending unit and replace (this is how I've always done it)
2)Unbolt the bed and slide it over to provide access to the top of the gas tank and sending unit. (Makes sense...just seems like moving some heavy stuff that you don't have to to me...whatever works for you though

yep droping the tank is how we do it at the shop. but thats on a lift too though. The sending units do come alone. But some of the stealerships will prolly tell youdiffrent.

Funny, I work at a stealership and have never seen a listing for a separate sender for the new trucks. Only shows a fuel module assembly which is pump and sender together. Besides, why go though the trouble to drop the tank and not change both anyway. Also, if you have a Goodwrench service plus dealer there I would bite the bullet and let them install it. Dealer installed it comes with a lifetime warranty. Over the counter parts purchase only has a 12/12 warranty.
Also from my experiance, the fuel pump isnt the expensive part anyways. The senders when separate can be $350.00 bucks when a pump is only $100.00. Thats on older vehicles that can be had separatly though.
Greg, see what you can get price wise locally and then send me a pm. If I can do better to help you out i'll try.
