So the 5.3 MAF is larger than the 5.7 MAF on the Ls1's in our Camaros? Hmmmm... news to me.
On another note....
Anyone done any mods to the stock air box?

My truck with the MAF screen removed made it run a little richer. It is in a safe place but could benefit from it being a little lower. I believe it is running right around .94-.95 on the o2's at wot. (the truck has the same MAF as the Z06 to my knowledge....IAT is combined into the maf unit also, along with being bigger than the f-body; like the z06)

I haven't touched my stock airbox yet but in the trucks you can take a look at it and see many ways of improving the incoming air flow. On your vehicle John I am not sure how it is set up. Never seen the engine compartment.

hey bigtex, i think i might be able to prove u wrong <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> i just looked at my autotap runs that were on nitrous... but remember i didnt turn nitrous on till just past 3000rpms and my 02s were at .96-.975 before i turned on the nitrous, then it jumped up to the 1's lol. i dont see how though. what i was thinking was... i dont see how taking the screen off could affect the accuracy of the readings at all though, because the screen is before the sensor wire, so removing it shouldnt effect the readings, i may be thinking dumb though. i dunno

hey raughammer, u can cut a hole in the front of ur airbox and get like 5rwhp, run a ram air tube to the bottom and that may be good for another 1-2rwhp

I hear the '02s dont have an EGR either, is that true as well?

I really wish I had an autotap log of before and after descreening the MAF. I have been looking into ways to richen up my truck. I keep running across articles that point to the MAF as the key to the PCMs fuel mixture.

If you are a cheap *** (like me <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> ) you can just chunk the whole airbox and clamp a round K&N filter on the end of the MAF. Get the K&N inteded for use on 96-98 350 Vortecs (~$50) and it is a near perfect fit. I guess a Holley filter would work too, but I haven't seen any around here yet. It will look like this:

Either way, when you are at the track you can pull out the headlight for instant Ram Air. <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> Not sure how well it would work on a Avalanche though. <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

one thing i never thought of that was in that thread talking about keeping the maf screen in was that the screen will even out the airflow through the maf

i just ordered a laptop off of ebay, so after i get that in im going to hook up w/ another guy who still has his stock maf and im gonna swap his for mine, get some readings to see what it really affects.
