exhaust tips and loudness

Hmm, maybe this explains why my exhaust is so quiet? Maybe instead of changing the muffler, I should have just changed the tip? I've been using a tip that was taken off an old (GMT400) Denali or Escalade. I liked the way it looked. I guess it is safe to assume that GM put a bit of sound canceling or sound reduction engineering into this tip.
