I'm still not positive it's detonation. It could be something loose rattling around the engine bay at high rpm at full throttle?

Default noise

When i had my truck tuned at nelson (w sts turbo), a "mechanical" noise came from the engine compartment. It was not knock according to tuner. However, my valves were floating. It was necessary to install stiffer valve springs to pull the valves out of the way faster.

My 2 cents

Can the valves float at stock rpm rev limit? 5600 in first gear and 5200 in 2nd and 3rd?? That seems like a very low rpm to have valve float?

It's not a high pitched pinging noise, it's just a rattling type noise that isn't consistent like what I would think pinging would sound like. It's like someone has BB's in a soda can and they're just barely shaking or swirling them around the can.

Either way, it's annoying as I was worried it was engine knock. Because otherwise the engine sounds pretty glorious with the AEM intake and Magnaflow cat-back. Having that rattling noise is distracting.

If anyone has any knocking/pinging experience, could you chime in and let us know what that sounds like?
My truck makes a little noise like that too at high rpms like when i shift from 2nd to 3rd like around 85-90 mph. Iv'e thought about it too but i don't think it is anything to worry about.

You live in DFW right? Should be a dyno around there somewhere. Have somebody monitor it during the run for your problem. If it turns out to be pinging, you should make the dealership cover the cost of the dyno and fix it. If it's not pinging maybe you can a better idea of what the noise is since your not actaully driving it. Peace of mind is worth the dyno cost IMO.

When did you last change your fuel filter?A clogged fuel filter will cause a lean condition at high rpm's leading to fuel starvation and detonation.

mine does the same thing, my old tuck, t/a, and esp the explorer did it, mine was always solved by putting premium in it, i eventually ran the old truck on premium all the time but that was when premium was $1.30 so that ain't an option anymore
