engine questions

I am having a argument over my new truck. I am proud owner of a used 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3. I am trying to tell my stupid ford friend that it has a modified ls1. He says that it does not. Anyways it is alot faster than his F-150 with the 5.4. Right now it is all stock. I have many plans for mods down the road. Thanks

I wouldn't say your 5.3 is a "modified" LS1. They are both GM Gen III engines but that's where the similarities stop. This means they both look the same in appearance (with an untrained eye) but the LS1 has a more aggressive cam, better head flow rate, and different pistons/crank. Since your 5.3 is a Gen III engine, it has ALOT of potential to have power equal or better than a LS1. This site has information on how to unleash the power from your 5.3!

5.3's and 5.7 (LS1) have the same stroke crank.
LS1's heads are similar but have a little larger intake valve and a couple cc's larger combustion chamber if I can best remember.
LS1's have an aluminum block and your 5.3 is cast iron.
Cams are different and intakes as well.
That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.
