Default Educate me on shift kits: Good or bad for the trans??

Hi guys,

My 4L60 tranny went out on me this week and I'm thoroughly researching my options.

Let me make the most important point: this will never be a race truck and will never be launched on slicks! I tow with the truck and like to race Hemi's on the street.

I'm considering either a rebuilt (and beefed up) 4L60 or a 4L65. For either, I am considering a Transgo shift kit.

I know the purpose of the shift kit is to firm up the shifts. But it is bad for the tranny? Will it shorten the tranny's life?!?!

thanks,
Chris

this has been discuassed alot. I would really look into the 65 for an upgrade over the 60.

Should I do the billet servo upgrades as well as the other inexpensive upgrades on the 4L65? Or, is the 4L65 strong enough as it is ?

Does the 4L65 need the billet servo?

yes, might as well get it if you are getting the tranny anyway, and an al. accumulator piston. There is other stuff but these are cheap.

actually, a shift kit will make it last longer. the nice soft granny shifts come from slippage. slippage = premature failure of clutches and bands. put a good kit in it with the servo and you will be fine.
