You asked for it:

How silly power wise are you wanting to go? In cruise mode, unloaded, low to no boost I'd bet low 20's for MPG would be attainable on the freeway. Just run one of the programmers in Economy mode

Here is where I'd start:

Duramaximizer - 0 to 100hp more via a ****, helps with economy
4" Exhaust - more power, lower EGT's, about 20hp
Cold Aid Intake - more power, turbo spool to scare people, about 10hp
Multiclutch Torque Converter - Eliminates converter slippage under huge power when towing
Tech IV Programmer - 40-112-168 hp levels that can be added to the Duramaximizer!

Going faster:

Propane - about another 100hp. lower EGTs, better economy
Upgraded Valve Body - Eliminates slippage in trans, firmer shifts
Injectors - More fuel flow means more power, about 75hp-100hp

Lost your mind:

Nitrous - 100 to 250hp more, depends on fuel input levels...you need LOTS of fuel
JetHot the downpipe
Port and JetHot Manifolds
Port, Balance, and JetHot Turbo
Port Heads
Cam?

Pretty much every mod compliments the other one, like a multiplier effect type of thing.

Stock is 300tq @ 3100rpms and 520tq @ 1800rpms to redline! The block itself is badass: fractured steel rods (Mercedes AMG uses those), deep skirt, 6 bolt mains, oil squiters on pistons, 32 valves!, etc. Just an excellent mill to begin with.

The quickest I have seen is 12.5X in Colorado! I posted up the a 12.99 clip over in the Lounge. Most power I read was ~800rwhp/1400rwtq!

If you got the fuel, I'd run a 200 shot, the Propane will lower your EGTs so you can run a bit more boost too.

Oh yeah, with HUGE injectors they will get you a TON of black smoke when full load, full throttle, full boost but in economy mode. Otherwise you have a clean exhaust.

See sig for my mildly modded tow rig.I've stomped every 8.1 that I have raced and get 20mpg@70mph.

parish8 remember when I came over to pick up my eaton posi and I was telling you about my old duramax. It was a 2001 with a 6 speed and a bulldog 230 chip. Super fast faster than my current truck I am sure. Under full boost in fith it would slip the clutch. Never took it to the track but I am sure it would of been quick. I was trying to talk you into one and you said " NO, not a diesel" hehe

They are hard to find as they are built to last. Avoid the stealer at all costs, there are better deals around as the economy is down and people get into financial pinches. Look in the local paper or AutoTrader

I remember one thanksgiving a few years back I went to Minnesota to visit the family, and my cousin had this friend with a pewter 4x4 ext.cab duramax and he wanted to race so we went out in the country,my car was bone stock and this thing had a chip or something??Anyways I blew it away from a dig, then he wanted to go from a roll to get the turbo spooled up, this thing was on my rear the whole 1/8 mile or longer we raced i was very impressed.

Thats most of the reason i want a duramax, well that and all the local boys around here have built off road trucks, theres no races around here, and i would be pretty much the only one with a duramax,I want a nice rig with tons of power
