Default Dropping Oil Pressure>??????

Ok.. My parents have a 2003 Avalanche and it has around 45000 miles or so on it..

The other night my buddy was looked down and said the oil pressures at 0!!!!

Ok so I turned it off Immeditely and then turned it back on and it shot up to normal..

Ok so That was 2 nights ago... Now We cant figure out if the guage is messed up or the oil pressure is dropping out... Cause tonight it dropped slow from above 40 to 0... I stopped agian and then cranked it back up and it shot up to normal..

I was thinking guage but it reacts to the throttle...

What can I check or should I just take it to a mechanic.....

Might have issues with the pump. The pump dying is not too uncommon. Even in LS1 cars. The gerotor could have gone bad. Or something got stuck in the pressure relief, it gets stuck open it will in turn cause oil pressure to become non existant. Pressure sender is on the back of the motor behind the intake. Im not too sure if that year sticks up near as high as the LS1 sender does. It breaks pretty easily. Water in the conncetor possibly?? Something to check.
