well. im not as kool as all you guys. i change my own oil. its a 98 silverado. never get any (KNOCK ON WOOD) fine particles on my magnet. however. i will share with you other vehicles. since i have done maybe ove a thousand oil changes so far. i work at jiffy lube. on a 97 cavalier. well. heres a pic.

this is your standard GM magnet plug. the one where it gets thin at the top with a magnet tip. well. thats what came out. i got a really strong magnet on the fridge at work and as it was draining. i held it next to the flow of oil and it actually curved some. thats how much metal was there. teh cavvy came in again next month. this time a good size chunk of bearing. or maybe rod. but teh stoned *** driver kept driving it. havn't seen it in a while. wonder why...

on these newer trucks when i do the drain, i see sometimes particles on the tip. from years 01-present trucks. i would say majority of the plugs are not contaminated with particle. id say for every 5 trucks, maybe 1 is contaminated. hope this helps some. personally if i saw particle. id lose sleep on it. im the type that makes sure nothing is wrong. and yeah... hope it helps

Call me paranoid, but not do I have a magnetic tip drain plug but I also have a giant magnet on the oil filter.

I usually don't get much, if any shavings, on the plug. My theory is all of the oil doesn't pass by the drain plug but it has to go through the oil filter.

They're about $80 stew. It's a sleeve type thing that wraps around the filter

it actually sounds like a great idea, but isnt the oil filter supposed to pick that stuff out?
