Default Displacement on Demand.

Does anyone know when the trucks will begin seeing displacement on demand??

I thought it was supposed to be introduced along with the aluminum block engines for 2005, but I haven't heard anything about it.

Hmmm.... I wonder if they will implement a Hybrid with DOD... could make for a pretty significant gas mileage increase.

apparently it is avaialable in the Trailblazer with the 5.3. It's rated at 15/20 and 14/19 dor the 2WD and 4x4 respectively. Does anyone know how that compares with last year's model?

Displacment on Demand

based on the engine load the computer determines how many cylinders are needed. So maybe under hard accelerations the engine will be firing all 8 cylinders. If you are cruising on the highway with OD on the engine will be firing only 4 cylinders. This is all determined on how much load is put on an engine at that point in time.

This is my generic explaination for this.

As we speak one of the suppliers to GM for pistons is buying CNC equipment from us and I have seen the pistons as well. There are valve pocket cut outs designed to give clearance when the valves are pushed fully open when that cylinder is not burning gas. I'll probablly be getting some piston samples when the machines are run off for acceptance so I'll post them if and when that happens. I too think 2006 if the launch for this motor type. I have tried to score some 5.3 liter pistons for me but they say someone else makes those, I think in Mexico.

So it's like Dodge's 5.7 Hemi motor then? The gains in terms of MPG from Dodge are not that impressive using that technology.
For example dodge claims that you can see up to 20% reduced MPG. Seems pretty inefficient to switch to only 4 cylinders, and only gain 20%.

Hopefully this technology will improve over time.

Just imagine what tuners will have to face in terms of tuning these new motors.
