There are hot wire anemometers that just measure the velocity of the air using thermal resistance, with no ability to measure the mass of the air. So by saying that just heat is used to measure the mass of the air is incorrect. Other things need to be held constant in order to meausure the mass of the air.

I'm used to the hot wire design as being referred to a Mass Airflow Sensor, and Mechanical Designs (like Toyota's older design that had a flap that opened and closed in conjunction with a variable resistor, like a rheostat) being referred to as an Airflow Meter.
