I was not bashing your idea or anything, sorry if I came across that way, I would just go with your original idea and get the bolt on connectors with the O2 sensor bungs. You might be able to get away with bolting the headers in and being about to reuse your stock Y-Pipe and just use some pipe clamps to attach it or get that Pacesetter y-pipe or jegs has a stock Y-pipe with no cats u could probably cut some off and use.

In all honesty the truck will probably run better with 2.5" collectors and y mated to a 3" single cat back. If you already have the other y then I would just hack it up and reuse it.
A 5.3L motor doesn't need 3" collectors and y, I bet I'll pick up some substantial power after I get them installed.

Mine will be here Tuesday, prob wont install until later on. Don't see why they shouldn't work for yours too. Most long tubes I've seen are interchangeable 2wd-4wd. You just have to figure out what your gonna do from the headers back...with a transfer case in there.
