Default Cover alignment

well im about ready to get the covers back on the lq4. while i was reading through the manual, they say to use tool J-41480 to get the alignment of the front and rear covers correct. How are you guy installing your covers?? Seems like a long shot to me that oreilly's would have this tool. Do i need it?
This is the manual im looking at.

I took my old harmonic balancer and honed out the inside with a dremel untill it would just slip over the crank by hand, put the cover on loosely and slid the old balancer over the crank and it aligned perfectly

a little worried about how much the rear cover gasket sticks out above the pan surface. Probly seem paranoid about these covers, but i just dont want any oil leaks.

Mine was the same way, IIRC the part of the gasket sticking out makes contact right where you put the little bead of RTV on the oil pan gasket. Mine squished down when I installed the oil pan.
