Default continuous tstat problem, need help

Back when i installed the ls1 in my truck i also installed a 180 stat. after i filled the cooling system i could never get the water to flow. The tstat never seemed to open. The bottom hose always was about at ambient temperature and when i looked in the radiator the cores weren't flowing any water. So, i put the stock one in and it did the same thing. So i pulled the stock one off and disassembled it and just installed the housing. it's been running like since, but i would finally like to get it running correctly. is there a procedure on filling the system? do i need to bleed it? the small tube that runs from the TB to the radiator (at least on the 99's) isn't hooked up. i just have a piece of hose that is secured higher than the engine and the steam comes out of that during filling. then i plug is up just enough to let steam out. i don't think this is causing any problems.

any ideas?

thanks,

allen

When all else fails read the instructions. Yes there is a cycling phase to go through to get it to cool properly

i can't tell you what the problem is but i can tell you a little about the cooling system.

1st the tstat needs to stay with the housing that it came in, not sure what is diferent but you can't mix and match.

2nd the ls1's or at least my truck has something called a bypass tstat, when it opens it not only opens the pasage to the radiator it closes another pasage to the engine, the way it is suposta work is when the truck is running but cool it still cycles the coolant thru the moter just not thru the radiator, then once it get warm enuff it starts to send it thru the radiator. with no tstat you are geting alot of coolant that just goes round and round thru the engine without going thru the radiator, some of it does still go thru the radiator but once it gets warm you want it all to go thru the radiator.
