hey guys i need some help on this one.... i have a basicly bone stock 98 silverado with the vortec 5.7 and would like to be able to run with my buddy's 4.6 mustang. what would be the best and cheapest way to do this? thanks for the help.

 

Shouldn't take much to run with a 4.6 Moooostang. Clarify your definition of "cheap". At one time, my Hypertech-tuned 5.3 ('02 Yukon) ran a 4.6 & older 525i. If you want to spend a few hundred, get yourself of a nice cam(w/springs) upgrade & PCM tune.

Any 5.7 owners can chime in and tell you exactly what would work with your setup.

 

werd on the cam and the tune. look into some gears for the rear end with a posi, intake, good exaust, headers, and a lil stall

 

Everything that Bluecajun posted, I lost 3/4 of a second with my exhaust, Hooker Competition 1 5/8 primaries, 2.5" collector headers and Ed Wright tune (TM 100% removed).

When you use long tube headers, it forces you to get rid of the crappy L31 headpipes, they measure 1 7/8" OD, but crimp down much smaller than that in the bends.

I went from 3.08 gears to 4.10's and dropped about 3 tenths but lost some mph. I used an L35 S-10 torque converter and my 60ft dropped by 1-2tenths. I can stall this converter to 2500 rpm, my WOT shifts at 5500rpm used to drop back down to 3300rpm, with a slight hesitation in acceleration, with this converter, after the shift now the rpms are 3700-3800rpm, much better acceleration.
With the tune, get WOT TCC apply removed, its worth another tenth. Or when you race the guy, just after the shift into 3rd, push the brakes just enough to illuminate the brakelights, this keeps the TCC from locking up. The TCC only locks in 3rd at WOT after 85 mph as per the stock factory tuning. You can test this out by keeping steady pressure on the gas with your right foot, then tap the brake with your left foot, your tach should jump a couple hundred rpm, then drop down again after you release the pedal.
When I was testing the tcc lock at the drags, I had a lot of people ask me why i wasnt making a full pass, its weird but it works.

I havent made a full pass yet with my torque converter, Tunercat self tuning tweaks to the Ed Wright program, Marine intake or 3.42 gears yet, I wont until next year now. I am hoping for low-mid 14's.

At the drags a shorter serp belt that bypasses the power steering is also worth a tenth.

ok thanks for the help. im probably going to cam it now with a LT4 hotcam. As far as the gears go, i think ill do that too but i dont know what kind of gear i have now but i think ill go with a 3.73 because i think a 4.11 would be too steep for a daily driver. where should i go to get the gears and all that?

 

look around on ebay. There are always ebay online stores that have gears for cheap or you can take a look around hear and there is usually some good stuff around.
