To change transmission fluid or not?
#1
My truck has 96,000 miles. The transmission is doing fine. I do not know if it has been changed. Should I change it but not flush it or no? Thanks

its such a small minute amount especially when its been off for a while..
if you really wanna get that into it.. you can change the fluid.. then change it a second time.. and your almost guarenteed to get all the old fluids out..

I believe it requires 15-16 quarts depending on how much comes out, Dexron III of course.

DO NOT DROP AND CHANGE FILTER!
Tranny filters RARELY need to be changed..while dropping pan and doing filter your only grabbing 5 litres of the 15 thats in the tranny. I never suggest drop and fill..its essentially a waste. You need a complete flush...

NO HE DOES NOT NEED A COMPLETE FLUSH!
with this high mileage trans fluid never been changed before, doing this will cause you problems down the road. you see fluid becomes a bond between hard parts and clutch. friction/clutch material becomes dislodged over time and blends in with the fluid forming a bond to keep everything lubricated and cool. if you do a full flush you have the potential to burn up the clutch packs.
you need to...
drain the fluid, drop the pan, and change the filter.
your going to need 4 to 5 quarts of fluid.

yes bluecajun is right. that trans should of been changed a few times by now. if it hasnt been changed your going to change it and about a few miles down the road the trans will start to slip. theres a point were its pointless. and the junk in the trans becomes part of the trans itself to keep it alive
