Can you swap an oil pump without lowering the oil pan?

I've pulled my oil pump off to put in a different timing set.

With the amount of time I spent trying to get that bolt restarted, I would have definitely been better off just dropping the pan. On a 2x4 it isn't that big of a deal compared to trying to get that bolt started, at least not with my fat fingers!

I had to back the oil pan bolts almost all the way out. I pulled my pump 3 times due to O-ring issues, and I found the easiest way to get the bolt started is to use a small magnetic pickup tool (same ones to hold the lifters up) and stick it to the side of the bolt, on the threads. Then you only have on hand in there.

I dropped the bolt in the pan about 12,875 times, and it never rolled back into the sump, and a magnet can easily reach it.

there's no good way to make sure the o-ring goes in right if the oil pan is in the way. maybe thats why so many people have o-ring problems and i never have..... pull the pan and do it right the first time.
