I know how to install the cam but my friend said that generally after you install a cam you degree it? I haven't heard any of you talking about degreeing a cam. What is it and is it neccessary?

 

You can install the cam advanced or retarded. I believe that either one of those can move the power band around and what not but I'm not 100% sure. I saw a chart somewhere on the internet but I can't find it now...

most likely you just need to line up the dots and go

 

you can advance the cam or retard the cam or install it "straight up" order the cam how you want it and install it straight up, they can grind the advance/ retard into it for you if you get it custom

 

Degreeing a cam is what most hardcore builders do to insure the cam is ground to their specs. It verifies the valve events (beginning, closing and duration) occur to the builders specifications. Other comments on this topic touched on advancing/retarding the cam. This is done to shift the powerband lower for more torque, or higher for more top end power. My suggestion to the average joe is to install the cam "dot to dot". Most reputable cam grinders that include a "cam card" have ground the cam to the specs shown on the card. Good luck!
