Cam help for 5.3L
#1
Well I'm going for a cam now, what is the best cam for a daily driver that doesn't require tuning and when I open my cutout people know the cam isn't stock. What gain can I see from that cam over my small stock 99 cam. Anyone have one for sell? What spring will I need with it. BTW I did look at the truck cam sticky thread but I'm looking for u guys input. Thanks

With those gears and a stock torque converter I wouldn't go any higher than the one I have in my sig or you'll lost low end. Mine actually has a little lope which I'm sure could be tuned out, but I haven't tuned it since the install, so people who know cars know I have a cam. I'm sure it would sound pretty mean with a cutout. Comp 918 springs or GM LS6 springs would both work. You'd likely see 15-20 RWHP throughout the band without a tune, maybe 20-25 RWHP with a tune. Good luck.

Well, I do hate to state the obvious or beat a dead horse here, but here goes. Get ya a good tune and a converter before you cam out that truck. If you don't, you'll wish you did. Did you say that you want people to hear the cam with the cutout or not? Sorry had a little difficulty deciphering that part. Cam+cutout=lope. With tunes the lope can pretty much be tuned out for the most part unless you go huge with it.
Now, as far as cams, the best sources for figuring out what you want is either the sticky cam thread here or thunder racing IMO. But I would highly suggest a tune and converter before hand. This would allow you to run a larger cam if you so choose. I would think that a trailblazer converter would be more than enough for you if you are wanting to stay a relatively mild cam and while there are several cams available that don't require tuning, always expect the unexpected, plus while these cams may not require tuning, all cams will benefit from good tuning to maximize the gains.
Oh and as far as valvetrain, you will need some valvesprings, if you go a shorter lift, LS6 springs should work fine otherwise a set of comp 918's will do, and I suggest pushrods and since your truck is a 99 might as well throw in some new retainer, and you will most likely need all the gaskets.

Thanks for the helpful info, maybe I'll get the trail blazer converter installed along with a shift kit servos and an tuned 02 pcm and injectors first..

Well, this is just my personal opinion but I think you'd be much happier going that route. I just don't think you'd see much gain from a cam that requires no tuning and will work with the stock converter. Not that it won't be better than the stock unit, but you have another strike against you too, being that yours is a 99 model and they are notorious for having knock issues. I think upgrading to an 02 PCM and tune and then a Trailblazer converter, then a cam and your set.

What seirracrew said I will be getting a cam soon in my 6L when I get it and I already have the prerequisite mods to make cam work good. A stall will allow to go bigger since if you need to get on it you will automatically go up to a higher rpm than stock so the bottom end lost wont even be noticeable.

Go with a Comp 212-218-522-529-114..... It lopes pretty good.....
Go with a good set of ls6 springs....
You might have to get your idle raised to 700-750or so... But other than that its a great cam..
I got 31rwhp and 19-22 ftlbs

My cam's very mild for the street, but with the 99 PCM it was a total pig. It runs better with a base tuned 02 PCM than a custom tuned 99 PCM because of the KR issues. It doesn't lope at all though
(I'm sure that a 112 lsa would help that)
