It is still a 110, but it has 4 degrees of advance ground into it. It will bring the power curve down and probably smooth out the idle so it is less noticeable.

I know a certain car that passed with a 224º/228º .588"/.589" 114lsa cam several years ago. The tailpipe test was really clean given the overlap of the cam. As long as the CATS are in good shape and the tune is proper, you can pass with a pretty decent sized cam.

Good luck,

Richard

That's the key, Richard, and the rub. Not too many people in California who could tune a 224/228 to pass smog...I bet you could count them all on one hand.

If you don't have one of them in your stable, you're likely better off with a 220/220 or lower.

I also saw a customer's Camaro put out 0%CO with a 220º/220º 112+4 cam during a CA smog test. The CO output was so low it was starting to drive up the HC count but the car passed with flying colors. It had LT headers too.

I have tuned quite a few cammed cars and most* have passed smog with cats, it is not that hard to tune a cammed vehicle, if done right it will pass. Hell I even know of an LS2 GTO that had a 228/232 (XER lobes) on a 112 that passed smog, it was untuned still. After the tune the emission numbers improved! Hack job tunes will not get it done, I had a customer that wanted me to fix his tune to pass the sniffer (he had sold his car, so it needed a smog check), the tune was a hack job tune via the PE and IFR for WOT only. Needless to say it wouldn't pass, as I couldn't make the actual AFR match the target. I would have needed to make it target 12.2 in order to run 14.7 to pass, closed loop kept it from going that "rich". This was a 2000 TA with a 210/218 cam on a 114. Proves that just because you have a small cam, if the tune is not correct, it will never pass. Good lcuk guys!

*the others have not or did not smog there vehicle yet.
