Default CAI Questions

Ok, I have been debating whether or not to go with a complete cai system, or just replaced the "hose" between the box and tb. I was looking at the volant system if I was going to go with a full box and hose, otherwise I was going to build my own tube.

any thoughts.

Well, making your own CAI is alot cheaper than buying a complete kit like the volant. I belive a CAI kit is better looking in the engine bay than a custom made one. Any CAI kit gives you about the same gains and I like the AEM Brute Kit. So I would go head and buy a kit.

I was thinking of cutting a hole in the front of the air box behind the lights and then building my own duct. But, by doing this I am destroying the original, and I would like to keep it incase I decied to get rid of this thing.

How about the the air ram systems that connect to the tow hook areas. Are they worth a try. I do a far amount of highway driving.

I made a ramair setup that mounts behind the tow hook on my 04 silverado. I love it. It's not a true "ram air" because I left the stock holes in the air box open. I noticed a 0.1 second improvement with my setup while running the stock paper filter. Do a search for posts by me if you want to see pics.

I was going to make my own like alot of the people here, It is cheaper and will probably get the same hp as a bought one. I found a aem on ebay and picked it up for about 200 bucks. Looks great. Opened or closed element will get ya about the same hp and the open element is louder. Good luck

I have been doing allot of tuning on my truck with a Volant caI. I have run it with the box and without the box. I can tell you that I see at least 3-4 more lbs. past the mas then with the box. In fact just the other day I hit a record high of 45.68 lbs past the mas on basically a stock lq9. and then when I go to the track I pull the head light and can pick up about another lb at the mas.

Either way will be worth some sort of gain IMO. Some of the homemade set-ups that I've seen around here are really nice quality jobs, and I'm sure the feeling of accomplishment factor is pretty big. I had the K&N FIPK and now have the Volant w/ ram air. They both seem to perform the same to me, and actually sound kinda similar. I really like the quality of both too...the Volant really seems to go well with the theme I have under the hood (black and blue). You could always try the homemade route first, and if you're not happy with the results, go aftermarket. Here's a pic of my truck with both the K&N and Volant:

I think I am going to try making one, and start saving for a volant, they look so nice in the truck.

Good pics
