CA Emissions
#1
I bought a couple carsound/magnaflow catalytics converts for my 02 Z71 Tahoe, and found out yesterday when I went to have them installed that they're obd2 legal but not CA legal. They're part #94106 and it's my own dumb fault for not researching more. This is for the "family car" so I don't want to pay someone to pass it. The pair were only about $110, and I'm looking to either trade someone some stockers, or sell these. Where should I get a set? $279/each at the muffler shop is far more expensive than the $55/each I paid for carsounds. Let me know what you think I should do... The check engine light is on due to bank 2 being inefficient. Already put new o2's, plugs and wires on it, same thing.

Technically they're illegal but I would seriously doubt that you wouldn't pass smog. As long as the cats are doing their job you'll pass the sniffer. They don't really have any reason to look under the car unless you give them one.

AFAIK, if you replace the cats before 80,000 miles and there is not a case of documented failure, you're technically in deep doo-doo with the state of California. Emissions equipment warranties are 80,000 miles, so if you do have problems, the dealer must repair the problem, even if the rest of the car's warranty has expired. And they will replace the cats with stock cats.
That's the flag - if you have aftermarket cats on a vehicle with less than 80,000 miles, that's a problem (at least with a smog center that goes by the book).
