The wire from the harness that taps into the AC wire is relay driven so i dont understand how it can have any affect on the fans coming on "sometimes".
Basically it is taking small voltage (ac wire) to trigger higer voltage through the relay.

As for the pin you are talking about if it is putting out + voltage it should work.
