Default BigTex, Please help with cam choise

I really need some help chosing the right cam for my 2000 5.3 .Is there a cam that you can use with just a HPP3. I would like it to sound nice, but what ever gives me good mid and top end. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Are you asking for a cam that will give you good gains without having custom tuning?

If so, get a cam custom ground from a sponsor. It will need at least a 114 LSA to give it a good idle. Duration numbers can't be too high or it will make power to far past the hypertechs rpm limiter and shift points. Almost any cam will give you an increase in the mid and upper rpms, so that part is easy.

Try this:
Comp cam grind
210 / 214
XE lobes
115 LSA
+5* advance ground in.
-- Use comp 918 springs.

I think that 210 is the smallest XE lobe they make. That should pack a good punch in a small package. The advance will help keep the power level down in your useable rpm range. The 115 LSA should keep it tame with a good idle.

Good luck
Richard

*** Look at the first cam in the second section. It is a 212/218 with XE lobes. I tried to use that cam with smaller duration and more advance.

BigTex, thanks for the advise. So this cam will work with no computer mods? Will I need a 3000 stall to take advantage of the high end HP? I'm hoping to get the cam done before I go back home to Tx. in early June.

A stall would help. Tuning would help also. I don't think either are required. It will pull hard past your hypertech shift points and rev limiter. It should also be friendly for a little nitrous use.

How can I set the rev limiter higher, say 6500-6800? And is it safe with stock internals?

Thanks for all the help by the way.

Programming will let you spin the engine higher. If you use good springs, you can spin it to the low 6Ks with no problems. 6500 is pushing it.

Right now the rev limiter is set at 6200 and my shift points are set as close to that as possible without hitting the limiter. On the dyno my peak HP was just a little over 5800, so I figgured if I run it up to 6100-6200 I should stay in my power band better.
