Usually if bolts are tight, if you hit them with a punch, hammer on the head it will shock them and 90% of the time they will come out.. For the bolts on the Y, get a torch and heat the **** out of them. Im with Dustin on the extracter kit.. GOOD LUCK. Try to find a right angle drill, a left handed bit, or if there is enough meat sticking out, try to weld a nut on the broken stud... If that don't work you might be ***'d
Good advice here.

Most of the time, the bolts will be corroded only at the head of the bolt/stud and slightly into the head. If it broke off, I think you will be suprised of the power of a good extractor or a left handed drill bit, I snapped a manifold bolt on my old mustang and used a left handed drill bit and a small cordless drill...it came right out in 5 seconds. Just had to run a tap back into the head cuz I boogered up the threads with the drill bit.

A buddy here pulled his stock heads and had them redrilled/tapped for bigger header bolts 3/8" fine thread I believe. And had them milled while he was at it no need for new heads, and the work cost him about $150 locally with milling and all, I'd guess a competent machine shop could do this for $75 or so...

Wow, i actually made quite a bit of progress. With some strength, ingenuity and a set of these I bought years ago:

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brows...iece%2BSet.jsp

I was able to finally extract 8 studs in all. I have one really tight bolt that's rounded off, and two bolts with snapped off heads but with stems sticking out.
I'll pick a set of these up when my Girlfriend's off work and hope to god it'll do the trick:

But my bigger problem... is the one that's snapped off with no stem, I'll have to chase it somehow.

I'll post pics before I get to them tonight.

Both of them work well. I didn't think you had enough to grab it with something like that..

Well, turns out that the bolt extractors worked well. So I got 1 more out (the rounded bolt), but I would need a smaller extractor for the studs sticking out, which i'll look for later... the smallest extractor gripped onto the studs but is about a 1mm too big. Today I'll deal with the worst of them all before i spend money on another extractor... The bolt stuck into the engine without stem, already got 1 out, but it was deteriorated, this one is rock solid.

In case worse comes to worse... what do you guys think about this engine? was the only one I could find. It's an upgrade from my 5.3 but would be dangerous for my tranny and rear end.

The guy SAYS that he only has 80 000km/50 000miles on it, no oil burning at all.

No need to change engines lol.

Just pull the head off and take it to a machine shop. It will cost you your time to pull and put the head back on, a new head gasket, coolant, and whatever they charge to remove the bolt.

How do you plan on swaping an engine in your condo's underground parking?

I'd just pull the head if it comes down to that.

As for the ones broke off with no stud, Make sure the broken portion is flat, TAKE YOUR TIME and center punch it, using a left handed drill bit, drill as strait as you can all the way through the bolt NOT the head, you will feel it in the drill. using a extractor, slowly try to rotate it out, if it does turn STOP, DO NOT break the extractor. Just go to the next size up left handed bit. At some point the bolt will come out with the drill bit or with an extractor.. Once you start to see thread in the hole, you shoudnt drill any larger, THE BOLT will come out.....

This is exactly what I'm going to do, Thanks for letting me know that it's actually possible, lol. Was wondering

Now to get to this bolt... I removed the manifold... but stupid me didn't realize the dipstick goes right between two pipes on the manifold. i've read about how most people tend to just pull on the dipstick to pull it out and most seem to break.

What would you guys think if I simply cut the piece that connects it to the head, slide the exhaust over the stick instead of under and when the new lpp's are installed, weld it back when i have access to a welder?

Ok, so i got the dipstick tube out by pulling on it hard but very straight and wiggling it a bit.

I started drilling at the bolt... and maan this bolt is SOLID, unlike the other that took 10 min. after an hour of drilling, i'm practically nowhere. I'll put a headset on with music and keep at it though. I only started getting a slight hole, you can just call it a dent really. Here are some pics I took through the wheel well, which is from where I'm drilling of course. The first pic is before I started drilling, the second is after.
