Default Best exhaust setup?

I'm looking to do a cat-back setup on my truck as my first mod. I want something that'll add the most hp gain and flow the best for my truck. A lot of people told me to put a 40 series flowmaster in where the stock muffler is and dump it in its location. Also, they said to replace the cat-back piping where it exists with a stainless 3" setup off the cats. I have also heard the magnaflow dual setup works really well. I want something semi-caust efficient for the muffler. Thanks.

Hello I have the same truck but in the '03 version. I have a 40 series Flowmaster on it with it dumped before the rear axle. It sounds pretty good and adds some extra horsepower. I like it but I perfer the sound a little lower and louder so I am changing it to a Dynomax Ultra Flo muffler. Take a look at their site if you want. www.dynomax.com

Once/if i get my truck, i'm doing a side-exit before the rear wheel setup, without question. I'm probably going to use a dynomax bullet in place of the stock muffler, like i did with my Z. It sounded spectacular, so i've got high expectations.

I bet a Gibson super-truck would be good as well, but i can't speak from experience.

The exhaust that you build should depend on what you have and what your goals are. If you're gonna stay basically stock with a few bolt ons, then there are plenty of bolt-on kits out there that folks love and hate. Also, maybe you'll want to end up going with long tube headers, delete the cats, and a custom true dual set-up? These are items that you might be considering if you plan to swap in a larger camshaft...there's alot to consider when choosing an exhaust.

You'll find around here that nobody like Flowmaster...seems they don't live up to their name...they're often referred to as "slowmasters" If you're concerned about sound, search for some clips of Magnaflow, Borla, Billy Boat, Hooker AeroChamber, Dynomax bullits, etc.

Or, if funds are an issue (they are for all of us ), you could just find a tried and true brand of muffler to replace the factory muffler with, and retain the factory pipes...there's really nothing wrong with the factory pipes, they're well bent and stainless steel. Then you just have to pick which muffler (hardest part if you ask me, as everyone has a different idea of what sounds good)

Some of the better bolt on cat back systems are Magnaflow, Borla, Corsa, Billy Boat...I'm sure I'm forgetting a few also. Do a search and see if you can find some sound clips to help give you an idea of what they sound like at least. I have a Gibson cat-back, and it's held together well through about 4-5 NJ winters, but I really don't like the sound it has...not deep and loud enough. It's not bad, just not great....there's better systems out there for the money.

Good luck!

dont go with flowmaster, you'll end up changing it.... go with what "budhayes" said... any muffler that is a straight thru design is better than a flowmaster.... and if you aint looking to spend alot of a cat-back just replace the stock muffler with one of the above recommended and keep your stock pipes...

How about placing a Flowmaster 40-series in place of my stock muffler (for sound and gas miealge) with a cutout right before it for when I go to the strip?
