Default Bad alternator?

I recently painted my alternator and I attempted to take it apart before I did. I could only get it aprt like 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch (the pulley was off the front...I had forgot once before to remove it) and it wouldn't go any farther. I used the 4 bolts to pull it back together and put it on the truck. Well it would only show a charge of 10-11 volts on the gauge. We thought maybe one of the brushes got messed up so we started to hit it with a deadblow hammer not to damage it, and after a few good shots it jumped up to 15-16 and stayed. Even with the heater wide open, headlights on and stereo (sub and amp) goin, it would draw it down to almost 14. I let it run for awhile and it stayed way up. Yesterday (3 days later) I started it and same thing it was down around 9-10 again and after hitting it some more it jumped up to 15 or so..did I really mess this thing up by only getting it a little bit aprt? and how bad is it to let it charge aroudn 15-16? Please Help!

Could you somehow fix a small cable to a 1/2 inch nut and tie it onto the belt, so it hammered on the alternator every revolution of the belt?

Haha going from what you guys have said, I'm f'd without a kiss! It just looked too easy for me with the 4 e-torx bolts holding it together.

The 1/2" nut didn't work, we had to end up using a 3/4" nut
