is the baby 4.8 any good?

Ok, Im picking up my new baby. It has the baby 4.8 v8.... For a police package Truck, I would think they atleast put the 5.3 but no they did not. The vehicle is a Tahoe police edition 4x4. I was planing to TVS a 5.3, but I may TVS the 4.8 until it blows, in plans of a 6.0. I may just start building a 6.0 in the garage until that special weekend.
What is the performance like on the 4.8? Dont know what to expect? Turd?

Some people are running some great times with them, but usually they have some deep pockets or outstanding fabricating abilities.
However with that said, it's essentially the same engine as the 5.3L or 6.0 just smaller. There for you will have to find a way to make up the extra 75 horse power difference between a 4.8L and 6.0. Personally if you have plans to TVS it, I would swap the 6.0 in there in the first place. It would be far cheaper and you might as well start with it.

Thanks for the fast responses. I dont really want to spin it to 6000, as Im torque hungry. I agree on pulling it and putting the 6.0 to start with. Cause I would love to just stroke a 6.0 for the torque. Reason for the TVS was the instant off idle torque it produces. Im certain the TVS 6.0 blows the TVS 4.8 out of the park. Just throwing out some of my ideas. I would love to get up there in the 800lb rear wheel torque numbers.
The truck is heavy, and I will be doing a 80e trans on it to handle the added power.

The 4.8 lacks the torque but you can wind it on up there in rpms. Im sure its a different story with a tvs though. Get a really loose stall, gears and your torque issues will be fixed. Id say skip all that and do the tvs 6.0!

I'd wind out the 4.8 until you have a replacement ready to drop in. then take a weekend to do the swap.
For what it's worth i'm shifting my 5.3 at 6400. Dont know where the TVS will lose efficiency but i'm sure it'll pull for a while with a mild cam.
