This might be a stupid question but, what would it take to convert a C1500 Chevy 2003 2WD to a 4WD/AWD? Will the whole frame need replacement or just the front portion of the frame? Is it possible to add the components to the exsisting front end?

Has anybody done such a thing? If so any infomation would be appreciated!

I am considering this as you speak. Most guys will tell you to just go buy a 4wd and that is probably good advice, but it can be done. At this point I am unsure of the best route but I am leaning towards replacing the entire frame. The steering, suspension etc are all different.

I don't know if it would work, but could you go with a straight axle conversion with a dana 44 or even dana 60 from a ferd? It might be easier just to add the brackets on the frame for the springs, rather than replacing the frame. You would give up the ride of an IFS but you would gain in strength.

No offense, but why would you want to do this? If you are trying to get traction for drag racing, keep in mind that there are rear drive cars running in the 7's now on drag radials. I have a '84 Olds with a small block chevy and a small 125hp nitrous hit that can put down 1.6 sixty foot times. What I'm getting at is there are other ways to make a rear drive vehicle hook besides going 4wd or AWD and still have it remain "drivable" and "streetable".

I saw a guy in an s-10 at the track on my last trip. He was carrying the front wheels across the 60' mark and running low 9's.

Hey Flyer, check this video out. Look for the little green small block s-10 on nitrous running 8.20's.

i agree if your building a 2wd drag truck for the track you can get it too hook if you set it up right but on the street i questions if anyone with a 2wd and aproxamatly the same hp would be able to compete with a 4wd, especialy when you get over 500hp or so.

i personaly want to OWN the streets so a 4wd makes sence for me, i also want the sleeper/stock look and that is hard to pull of with 12"slicks on the back.

Those sliocks would damn sure give it away ... but some nice Nitto 555 radials wouldn't look to shabby on there, and it seems like they may do OK on the street even when wet they aren't to bad. (I was reading some tire forums about them)
