Default Avalanche handling, and durability of the "Plastic" components...

Well this morning was exciting...

Driving to work, I exit off the freeway. Right beyong where the offramp there is a road to the right. The feeder is 3 lanes wide. As soon as I am off the ramp, and on the road...I notice a small car on that side road to the right, approcahing his stop sign...but not stopping...infact there is NO WAY he is going to make the stop.

It happened way to quick, but he basically blew onto the feeder road, right at me. I brake real friggin hard, and steer hard to the left. leaving the road, and onto the grass between the freeway, and the feeder...I was still making some really good speed when I initiated this move.

At some point the guy got his car sideways, now pointing the right direction...he is so close to me he must be partway off the road on the far left side. I could only see his roof right next to my truck. I come to a complete stop.

After the initial shock I have two general impressions. The truck handles..badass for a truck. I tore some ligaments in my ankle a month ago...I hit the brakes so hard I re-tore them again. The abs worked flawlessly on the pavement, and as well went I went into the grass/dirt. I never felt even remotely out of control.

Secondly...I took out two small metal poles with the front composite bumper. Theres's not even a scratch on the composite pieces. I've been told those pieces are tough, and I'm not gonna go beat on em to test it out, but they sure held up to those little poles no problem. I don't know how far they were in the ground, but I was probably doing 20-25mph when I hit the first one.

First of all, i'm thrilled your OK.

Secondly. Yep.. that about sums up my opinion of the "composite". My wife went to take the boy to school last week. when she went out side.. it was POURING. She jumped in the Firebird, with the boy, and tried to back out of the driveway. Because of the rain she couldnt see very well. As she was bakcing up she heard this "noise"... she didnt know what it was but tought. "I hope I just didnt hei John new truck. She did. She rubber her right rear fender (about two feet) against my left rear fender. (on the plastic) Her car sufferd minor scratches that I "should-maybe" will be able to polish out. The truck? Nothing... nada, nuttin. Wile her car suffered from the contact? The Avalanche? Came out looking like brand new.

I tell you, I love this truck!

P.S. I havent had to steer and use the ABS yet.. but i did have to slam the brakes on in a panic stop. The truck settled down perfrectly with no pull to the left or right. Not as short of a distance as an F body. But not bad at all for a Big Ol' Truck.

Again.. Glad your OK Larry! <img src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" />
