Default advice on an old school truck

a buddy of mine purchased a 81 GMC pickup with a 350 engine. He said his goal was to get it in the 12s, just wanted some input on the way to go to achieving this goal. I know close to nothing about old school trucks so any input would be appreciated, thx fellas

Ahhh...I see. For the Mustang, we got a 460 bored and stroked out to a 508 along with the normal goodies (large cam, headers, good flowing heads, etc...) and we are eyeing the 700 horsepower mark. We are shooting for low tens and maybe, just maybe a high nine pass if we get it perfected. Take that information and switch it over to GMC and a 454 and he will get into the 12's easy...

If he strokes a 454, get a Barry Grant carb somewhere in the 1050-1150 cfm range...

you can build up a nice 1st gen 383 to run n/a 12's and still be streetable for a reasonable price.

with those old 350s in those trucks, they are hard to get out of the 15s. I was with a buddy one night at a car show. We were talking and we both smelled race fuel at the same time. We look over and this old 80's model truck is just cammin its *** off. My buddy drives a lightning so we wait for the old truck to get on the road and we go from a 20 punch. Mybuddy beat him by like 5 lengths before he let out of it at 70. It was pitiful. If a truck with a huge cam and race fuel cant beat a lightning from a 20 punch, he has got some issues. Mind you, i dont know his specs and what not so i really cant be sure.

Moral of the story...You are gonna need something potent to get him in the 12s NA

Yes, it can be done...

I will say this... I wish I had gotten the guys information, but there was a regular-cab, step-side C10 ('85 model, I think) that just happened to run beside me the first time I took my truck to the track. I talked to the guy for about 30 minutes before we got to stage up. According to him, he put over $10K in this 350ci motor, and about $15 - $20K in the frame off resto & rebuild. Looking at the truck, you can tell some MAJOR dinero was spent on it. Long story short, fat, meaty slicks, with thousands of dollars in motor and suspension netted this guy a high 11s pass N/A. Watched it personally from my drivers seat as he walked me and my 14.37 pass.

My advice, bore the block, get heads & cam that'll work together for high-performance output, trans & rearend to compliment, open exhaust for high flow, and suspension to put the power to the pavement. I wish I had gotten this run on film, or at least took pics of the truck. Was told by others that this guy builds up vehicles and sells 'em as a hobby. He was selling the truck, and wanted at least $30K for it.

12-sec pass on an N/A 350-based platform can be done.
