Default ? about cats and low octane gas

This is kinda OT, but the company that I work for recently told all employees with work trucks to fill up with midgrade gas instead of the cheap stuff because the cheap stuff is killing the catalytic converters.

I say BS.

What do you guys think?

That's horse ****. Octane has to deal with the fuel's resistance to knock...not how it makes the cats operate. If your run rich you will kill cats.

Besides how are they gonna know what fuel grade you run? Just stick to quality 87 and you'll be fine

I thought high octane fuel burned more efficiently - which is why its resistant to knock with a more thorough burn. If that is true, then low octane might burn less efficiently and your cats are seeing more unburnt fuel, in essence, 'running rich' just a though...........

The higher the octane, the slower the fuel burns. You only want to run as high of an octane as you need to not knock. Beyond that point is when you start getting more unburnt fuel which is what kills the cats.

even so, in the long run, wouldn't the money you save by using the cheap stuff out weigh the cost of new cats?
