97 Vortec 350, how to set timing?
#1
Hey all,
Just replaced the intake gasket in a work truck, everything went perfect but now it seems I'm getting a little backfire after the engine comes out of load cresting a hill. I have a timing light and autotap, was wondering if there is anything special to adjusting the timing / getting inital set?
Can anyone tell me what the initial timing should be set to? There were no stickers in the engine bay. I've read to disconnect the battery, ecm will reset itself and all will be fine, but I'm not having any luck from that.
Thanks,
Jeff

To set "timing" which will be cam advance/retard on a TECH2, I dont know if Autotap will have that PID or not , but to do it you adjust the distributor, which is nothing more than a cam sensor on this engine, to read as close to 0 as possible cam retard/advance. You'll have to get a baseline reading, then adjust, rev it over like 1500rpm then repeat until satisfied.
