Default 918 spring life questions.

Hi guys.

I've been running 918's for quite a while now. Maybe 30K miles. They've seen three different cams, for a relatively short time they were at a max of a little over .570" lift. Most of the time was .530". I'm back on the stock (LQ9) cam with ~1.82:1 rockers. Right around .513" and .500" at the valves.

When these springs start to reach the end of their life span... are they just going to lose tension which would comprimise high RPM valvetrain stablity -- or will they be in danger of failing at any time due to fatigue?

I've had some bad wrenching experiences lately and I'm gun-shy about going back in the motor for anything serious. If I can avoid swapping springs or just pulling my rockers to save some spring life, then I'm all for it.

Honestly, I think those will last a LONG time. Personally I think they are one of the best single springs you can run. With the lift you are running now and the low rpm max shift (compared to a BIG cam), I'd bet they will last another 50K miles easily.

I bought my 918s used. The previous owner was running an XER cam with .580+ lift, upper 6000s shift points and put 5000-10000 miles on them. I've had them in for 2 years now, up to 6500 shifts and 15K miles. No issues at all.

Don't worry about them.

Great, thanks for the reassurance Richard. That was basically my train of though too, but for some reason I've had a lot of mechanical paranoia lately.

No problem. Just get over the paranoia and get back to enjoying the truck.

i've only had mine in for 10k 5700 shifts and i don't give'em a second thought. could always pop a couple off and check the pressure at the installed height to ease the mind.
