Default 6.0 or 8.1liter

I baught a 2003 chevy 2500HD extended cab short bed 4wd I got better gas mileage out of my 95 7.4liter. I baught it with the 6.0 because the dealer talked me out of the 8.1 saying it gets worse gas mileage.I was wondering what every one elses experiences are because I was talking to a guy in my shop who has the 8.1 and he claims alot better mileage then me. Iam talking about not towing but load free mileage? thanks for the input

It should get 15-16mpg on the highway. Maybe more being a shortbed.

Believe me the 8.1L will not beat the 6.0L for gas mileage. I know somebody with one that is just barely getting double digit mpg. I tried to tell him before he bought it that it was a BIG BLOCK and they just don't get great mileage but, he bought it anyway. After he drove it for a month or so I asked him about the mileage, it took him a while to admit what it was getting.

My dad's '99 2500HD 6.0L Ext. cab longbed with ~140,000 miles still gets better mileage although it has dropped off here recently down to around 13mpg with spirited highway driving.

Give it some break-in time like Gonzo mentioned. It'll get better.

My parents have an 00 Suburban w/ a 6.0, gets bout 12-15 mpg or so. They recently put out some of the worst vehicles for MPG...almost all of them were trucks, and GM had almost every fullsize truck in the lineup lol. Ahhhh, isnt it great to be #1

My 8.1l is a pig usually I averge 8 mpg in town yeah I have a heavy foot. Hiway I can get 10-11 mpg running 60-65 mph . kick it in the *** a little up to 75-85 mph and it'll do 13-13.5 mpg. It seems a little unusual to get better mileage the faster you go but it does.

between myself and friends

...........town------highway-----tow
me 8.1.... 9 mpg ... 10+......... 8+
me 6.0.... 11 mpg .... 13+ ......... 7+
buddy 6.0..10........12.........5+
buddy 6.0 12........14.........???

towing is with approx. 3000lb..trailer loads
so if it all towing..8.1 is the only choice.
