Default 5.3 in need of towing power

Guys I need a little help. I need a cam for my truck. My truck is a little big for my little 5.3. For those of you that don't know what my truck is its a 99 4x4 ext cab lwb w/ 10.5 inches of lift and 37's. I have 4:56's in it and that helped but its just struggling when it pulls my trailers. Saturday my trip to OK City I got about 230-240 miles to a tank of gas and thats like 33 gallons!!

Does anyone have any good ideas on what I can do to help the power out a little, I am going to go with shorty headers and some custom exhaust. I also want to go with a Cam but what cam would be a good towing torque cam.

What else should I do?? I don't want to sink supercharger money into it or anything.

Here is a picture of my truck so you can see my dilema

First, welcome to the board, second, nice truck but what is that your towing j/k. To increase for towing either go with this cam Comp 212/218 .522/.529 114 or one step lower. I would also go with nelson tuning, long tubes, and a converter, like a yank tt3000.

go with some long tube headers they made a huge differance in the torque on my truck.with the 35 inch tires and 4.10 my truck was a pig towing.

A TT2600 or tt 3000 stall to keep it in it's sweet spot of torque. These torque converters by Yank maintain full towing capacity.Just be sure that you run a cooler up front since factory cooler won't be enough with a stall and towing.

dont waste your money on a converter i did and it was a waste of time and money for me and for what you are doing.i would go with a small cam and the asm headers and a custom tune.

Have you considered a 6.0L swap? I would think that would be your biggest bang for the buck for a tow rig. You could even install a good pulling cam in that 6.0 to make it really grunt.

With 37's you should be running a 4.88 or so. Other than lower gears........I guess a cam is your best bet. Nice truck!!

Thanks guys, I don't really feel like sinking alot of money into it (its paid off). I am just looking for a little more umphhh for less than 1000 bucks. It pulles the Cobra fine its the Enclosed trailer I have that really struggles, the funny thing is the Cobra dynoed twice the trq of the truck, maybe it should have been towing! I just want something to get it by for another year or so then I will build a 383 or a 396 for it, all my mod money is going into my other cars so the truck is getting the leftovers!

Thanks again for the help, I think I am going to go with the headers and cam for now. Who makes a decent cheap header for these trucks, I saw where Summit has some shorty's for it or are they even worth it?
