Default 5.3 to 6.0 in 2003 avalanche
the 5.3 is getting tired, what needs to be done besides a engine swap? new computer or just a retune of the 5.3 one? i can get another 5.3, but would rather have the extra HP

Gonna need a engine, swap all your current accesories and intake over to the 6L.
Perferrably a 03-04+ newer 6L.
Get the PCM set up for a 6L and get to work on installing it.

well then that answered that.... just need to head over to HIWAY auto, and grab a 6.0
