if the heads are stock that is the big hold up on a GM big block. Check the heads and see what you have and if they are a stock castion toss them and go to the aftermarket. If it has a carb find someone what knows carbs and have them set it up. Just like FI if you dont have it set up right it will be SLOW. My carb was really rich out of the box but I thought it ran ok..I took it to someone who knows what they are doing and dropped down 2 jet sizes and swapped for a much smaller power valve it was like having a new engine pulled alot harder and ran much better. Good Luck

The stock heads for that year are peanut ports...119cc. Get some semi-closed or closed chamber heads (105 or 96cc). That will raise the compression from 8 to 1 up to 9.5-10 to 1. That combined with headers and a cam maybe something in the 560 to 580 lift range should get you close if you have the right converter.

The headers made for that truck would work...all big block heads have square exhaust ports save for a very few round ones or a heavily ported set. You can probably buy around $1000 worth of stuff to reach your goal vs $4-5k with the 6L swap. You could always swap the multi port injection from a 2000 big block truck.
