what do you mean when you say 3rd??

I think he's refering to the "3rd member", or the rear end carrier, ring gear, and pinion gear assembly. The rear.

Landyachtz--The T/A at Pro Dyno is not having any bottem end problems. He is having valve train problems above 6300 rpms. The motor is as strong as any one could hope for, and you should have no problems with a correctly built 408.

The 408 will be as reliable as you want it to be. You start throwing in HUGE cams and stage 3 heads, you will stat to se longevity issues. I mean these motors go anywhere from 11 sec to 9 sec in F-bodies, but the 9 sec cars have more issues due to them getting to the max end of the tunning scale that's currently availiable. You can't always build a strip car to run reliably on the streets, but you can do it the other way around.

It's -30 Celcius (or -20F for the americans) where I live and my supercharged 408 has no problems. I don't even plug the thing in, it just fires right up and has been doing so for around 7,000 miles of this crappy weather so far this winter.
FWIW, I am also running a pretty big cam and max ported heads and just make sure to get my oil temp is up to at least 100 before taking it out of park to avoid spring failure. Build that big incher properly and have fun!!!

Just got my 408 in and its sick. Did a mild cam for it just for the reasons you are describing, reliability and longevity. I went with stage 3 heads, 2.055/1.6, but the cam is only 238/242 .608 115LSA
I have done spray on stock motor, turbo, and now this, and I must say I am most happy with this setup. I might throw a 100 shot on top, I better, since the whole internals are forged, and that should put me safely in the 10s. But even on motor I think if I run 11.50 or better I will be happy.
