How many people in here tow with a 4.8? how does it tow? anything i should worry about? anything i should do..... kinda strapped for cash!! brand new truck + engagement ring = broke @$$

 

I towed a 3500 lb boat without a problem with my '02 Z71. I would have reservations about towing something big like a toy hauler or travel trailer tho. What do you want to tow?

 

I've towed a "large" bass boat (~21 ft fibergless w/Merc 200hp) and it tows fine on the flat lands but it really feels it in the hills. I've also towed a light 17 ft aluminum bass boat and the truck doesn't even know it's there until you hit the hills, at even then it's barely noticeable. Either way the 4.8L is capable, but if it's a large load, like 5,000+ lbs be prepared to take you time on the hills. Then again once you get that heavy you should be taking your time anyway because of the extra weight affecting your suspension and brakes (the fiberglass boat's trailer has brakes, but you still know it's there)

 

Just 3 Sea Doo Rxt's Lets Say About 4000 Lb Total each ski was stock 860 lb, but ive had the hulls redone in carbon composite, so they are about 800 lb each, and 3 spot tandem axle trailer

 

I roll around with my quad in the back all the time. I towed 2 on a trailer and a bunch of parts in the back, Prolly round 800lbs plus in the bed and the trailer, no complaints.

 

SWEET..... thanks guys..... just wanted to make sure i wasnt gonna tear this thing up...... hear 4.8 was good for towing as long as not too heavy, but i figured i would ask since most of you will actually have done it

 

I've towed my car to and from the track. The cars 3300lbs, the trailer is about another 1000lbs and with all my tools and passengers, everything probably tipped the scales close 5000lbs. It did fine, but I was running an automatic then with a cam, 3000rpm TC, and 4.56's. I was more worried about stopping in a timely manner than accelerating. I wouldn't tow in 4th though unless you upgrade your servos.

 

Dont do it! Just kidding The 4.8's short stroke contribute to its lack of low end power and its lack of displacement. For what oyu intend on using it for you should be fine.

 

ive towed 4 sleds on a 21' flatdeck trailer and one in the back of my truck no problem with my 4.8 but you do notice it on hills

 

For the past couple weeks I have been moving from Jacksonville to Atlanta pulling roughly 4500-5000lbs on each trip. The 4.8 will tow fine, but like what others have said you will definetly feel the hills. Also I averaed 16-17mpg doing roughly 60-65mph.
