Depends on what you wanna do. If you're looking to mod the truck, I'm not sure that the NV3500 5-speed will last super long, and it's hard to find clutches for them from what I've heard.

Now, if you wanted to drop an LS1/T-56 combo in later on, get the 5 speed!

yeah the 5 speed is hard to come by since they stopped really making them. also they wont hold power worth a **** usually. But yeah if your going to rip it out anyways go the cheapest way possible which would be a 4.8 with 5 speed just to save some money.

I have the 4.8 5-Speed.

I can't speak for the longevity of the transmission, I'm only mildly modded, so far its holding up pretty well.

As for which is faster, I think the 5-Speed is faster than the 5.3 auto. But, its a source of much controversy. Back when I was stock I out ran several 5.3's in the quarter, however any more than that and they blew by me. My 4.8 reacts ver well to mods and I imagine it would run faster than an equally modded 5.3 (because of the gearing).

Anyway, either route you'll be happy, they are both good trucks.

(I plan on swapping in a T-56 whenever I melt this NVG 3500.)

standard cars are so fun to drive...
but the thing i hate about it in trucks is that the stickshift is so damn long, and the throw is huge!

It would be cool to develope a short shifter mounted on a console or somthing.

Yes, The replacement works perfictly.

I'm not going to fault the transmission for GM's mistake in design. Whatever the transmission problem is its fixed on the new ones. And it never had anything to do with the power of the engine since I was still stock when it broke.

As for the throw, it's suprizingly short.

Remember, I hate my dealership, not my truck. The new transmission they put in with whatever design changes GM made works great so far.
