yeah thats kinda what i was thinking lol. i would think the second was the off one becouse that would make for a really short piston and probably put the pin up in the oil ring area and i don't think they would do all that just to put a long rod in there doesn't make since to me but i dunno.

912jonathon, any results from looking up part #s? I think it would be worth it for me because I know my engine's been well taken care of, and changing the engine out would probably still be quite a bit more then the cost too change the crank/rods/pistons. As for power difference, I know on paper the 4.8 doesn't seem much different then the 5.3, but seat of the pants feel says their's a huge difference. That and if every bolt on adds a certain %, then you'd be getting more bang for your buck with the changes. Lastly, a cam would go in before resting the refreshed SB between the frame rails.

sorry, i have had no luck finding any answers. the part #'s are different on the entire bottom end though. i know the 5.3 has a 3.662 stroke and the 4.8 has a 3.268 stroke. my guess is you would have to change the rods and crank, but still not sure about the pistons. if you could use 4.8 pistons it would raise your comp. about 10.00-10.50.1 though. i think the simplist thing to do is just find a good 5.3 or 6.0 and stick it in. i will do more researching tommorrow
