Default 212/216 cam choice

I talked to the guys a comp today and asked what would be a good cam choice for my 2500hd, I told them I tow a little and wanted some lope, and I know you cant have lope and torque, but this is their suggestion, by the way I dont speak cam so if you can explain a little Id appreciate it.

Cam specs: 212/216 .520/.524 115* with hardened push rods, and 918 springs.

Also could I run 1.8 rockers or should I stick with 1.7's, Im not worried about the ramp rates just piston to valve clearence.

Thanks.

yes you could run 1.8's with that cam since the lift is low....

but why not get a 212/218 .565 114 cam and not worry about the rockers.. it would be cheaper to get a cam with higher lift ground in

check out vinci performance... i have the 210/218 .535 114 and love it you can barely hear it though... but vinci has cams with .550-.565 lift which is a little less than what the rockers would give you on that .520lift comp cam. But you would save 300bucks

Hell I dont know, Im just lookin for a cam that will keep low end torque I would like lope but can live with out it, what builds torque any way, is it the lift or lsa?

But yeah I can put that 300 to use else where.

When I had my '02 GMC 6.0L 2500HD, I installed a 212/212 camshaft on a 112 LSA. It still had the factory RPM idle, and the only tuning I had done was a Hypertech (over three years ago!). With the factory idle, I could not hear the cam at all. I was trying to retain low-end power as well since I did a lot of towing with the truck. It managed to pickup 25 RWHP over the factory cam, but I could not tell a difference at all in the low-end power. FYI, I did have 4.10's in my truck. The 212/216 camshaft that Comp recommended would work for you, but I would put it on a narrower LSA such as a 112 and then add some advance into it. This will help to bring the powerband of the cam down a little further to try and maintain some of the low-end power you're looking for. Don't expect a huge difference for the really low RPM range, though (i.e. 2,000 RPM and below). It's not going to gain much in that range, if any.

Feel free to give me a call or e-mail me at trevor@texas-speed.com. I'll be glad to discuss some cam specs further with you.

I'd go a little bigger personally. A lot of people here truck and are somewhat conservative. You've got some cubes over the 5.3. The 212/216 is a small cam for the 5.3.
