Default 2001 LS6 heads and cam in a 5.3L

i have an LS6 that i'm not planning on installing for another year or so into my truck, but am considering putting the cam and heads in the truck now. now i know i will loose compression, but i'm wondering if i can make up for the lost power with a custom tune, since the compression ratio will be lower will i be able to advance the timing more? just wondering because it will be easier to just swap the heads on then swap the valve springs. plus the valves on the LS6 heads are bigger.

It would actually be easier to do the motor swap than a head/cam swap in the truck. I pulled my motor out to do my head/cam swap.

I agree that it would probably be easier to just swap the complete engine, but if you want to swap just the heads and cam I don't think there will be enough difference in compression to really worry about. Probably could run a bit more timing and don't forget that those heads probably flow much better than your stockers and that easily offsets any power loss from compression difference, IMO.

i know it would be easier to swap the motor but i'm saving up for a stroker kit and forced induction so i'm just going to build the motor up when i have the cash to do it. does anyone know exactly how much it will lower the compression ratio? i heard a point. is that true?

cam will help a lot, heads need to be milled to correct for the cr difference
