Default 160 t stat or 190 with an sc application?

Last summer I was having issues with the ses light, and setting off codes that showed misfires and lean conditions. The shop thought it was related to having the 160 t stat in that came with the whipple sc, so they changed it out to the stock 195, claiming it was running in open loop with the cooler t stat. The issues continued, and now 9 months later with a rebuilt engine it appears we've got the ses light to stay off.

I'm not sure the 160 t stat had anything to do with the problem, and running cooler with a sc seems to be the ticket, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had any experience with this before I swap the 160 back in? Thx!

i'm running a 160 and an whipple [ computer disconnected] have'nt had any issues with that yet, but i live in california, have electric fans with the vsc set as low as it will go and still run consistant 180 temp. just disconnected the computer though and have'nt had it in cold weather yet. i'm fairly sure the "cold start" setting can be altered with edit. i'll ask allen [ he's tuning for me ] and let you know. i'm still learning about this stuff, but your symptoms don't make sense if it's going into cold start. if the pcm thinks the motor is too cold, it's response should be to back out timing and add fuel. with any boosted motor cooler is better [within reason] the hotter the combustion chamber, the higher the possibility of detonation. do you have any way to log ? i just reread your post, you have a whipple, are you running with their electronics ? if so their computer is supposed to modify the signal to the pcm telling it it is hotter than it is. are you sure you're not getting a low o2 voltage ses ? that's what mine was doing. for some reason their computer was telling my pcm that my o2 readings were in the .250 range at wot. if you have the electronics my advice is get rid of it. get a tune from allen or a local dyno shop, do the solonoid bypass discussed in this forum under "nelson tuning for whipple" and larger inj's, you'll be a much happier camper. let me know if you want more info, i'm going through it right now. i can let you know what to do and about how much it will cost. the other option is, whipple is supposed to be coming out with a new computer system. they should upgrade you for free, i don't know if it will work any better but it can't be any worse. e

The pcm goes closed loop at 140 so there is no issue running a 160. These trucks seem to run between 170 and 180 with a 160 tstat anyway.

Please update as you go. I am probably going to go with the bypass of whiples stuff and the larger injectors, along with the nelson tune sometime in the future.

Right now it seems to be operating ok, and we'll see how that goes for the time being. I've got my $ committed to finishing a 69 camaro project, so maybe we'll throw the 160 t stat on and see what happens till the fall.

I would like to hear what you end up doing with your project though, as to save me some headaches down the road. With my head work done, and the roller rockers, my boost has dropped from 7.5 to 6+, and I currently have 2 smaller size pulleys, but driveability is the key word right now.

Having run a 13.4 previously, I'm thinking a high 12 might be in the works when the weather cools, and I get things worked out, without going much over 8lbs of boost. Thx!

well as of now i'm tuning with allen for 5 lbs with a 7 pound pulley on the way. my mods are in my signature. i'm not suprised you're having problems running 7.5 pounds with the whipple computer handling the fuel. mine could'nt deal with 5. how are you compensating for the extra flow and the headwork, did whipple mod their computer for you ? as far as my tune is concerned, so far so good. power feels better with the larger inj's and pretty much all the negative symptoms i was having disappeared as some as i got my first tune. i got another one tonight [ allen got the efi live and can now see my truck in realtime], i'll keep posting as i go. so far the $ for the inj's and the tune is $ well spent in my opinion. eric
