What I am to understand is that the custom tunes go much much more in depth than a hand held one. You can change a lot more parameters and dial the engine better.

Thats true. But people get the wrong idea because you can still get 150+hp with an off the shelf tuner. Diesels are easier to make power. All those programmers do are reroute the fuel system and change the timing a little. Basically dumping all the fuel into it that a stock turbo can handle. Which they do a **** poor job of. Thats why you see them blowing so much smoke with just a tuner. Its not efficient but still adds power. Gas engines are totally different in the amount of power that comes out of a tune.
