That may cause some chatter since it is kinda like driving with two different size tires on the back. Another thing about the one wheel spinning... the G80 is designed not to lock up over 20mph. So if you get that one tire spinning too fast before the locker sees the slip, it will not lock up. As for the size of your rearend.. you hve a 8.6" 10 bolt with 31 spline axles.

Yeah, that probably had something to do with it.

Thanks BigKID I thought it was the 8.6 just by looking at the illustrations and the procedure for changing the fluid. I drove it around tonight and all seemed fine. I guess I have a tire loosing air cause I check them weekly. I read how the locker worked but didn't think to check the tire pressure. Gotta remember this for future reference.

On our trucks about the only way to get the locker to work is by nailing it from a dead stop. Once it locks in, if you get out of the throttle it will disengage. So once you are in the throttle, stay in it. That's why they aren't real reliable and alot of people swap them out for a real posi. There probably isn't anything wrong with yours, it was just still engaged when you tried turning and the inside wheel had to catch up the outside one somehow.

If you are in auto4 or 4hi the steering wheel will chatter at full lock because the front axles are engaged, this is normal.

Blue that sounds like what happened. I was hard in the throttle then turned and got back in the gass and I guess it didn't disengage. It sure sounded bad though. I'll remember this thanks.

Soquel I was in 2 hi at the time. I only use Auto4 when the roads are slippery.

Nightmare, how's that Detroit work for you? I've got a Powertrax locker. Definitely gets some attention in the parking lot, huh? I think its worth it, but thats just me...

G80's do chatter. They will engage to stop the wheel spin and then disengaged when the RPM difference between left and right has been equalized. If a tire starts spinning again it will lock up again. Sounds normal to me.

Go to Eaton's website (They make the mechanical locker for GM) and watch the boatramp video.

Here's a VERY old nighttime video of my truck taking off. It still have the 10-bolt with 3.73 gears and G80 in it at that time. You can hear the same thing:

Also, the 8.5/8.6" 10-bolt housing is symetrical. It looks the same on the right as on the left. The 9.5" 14-bolt housing is not, the bottom of the housing is lower on the passenger side. It's very easy to tell them apart without counting bolts. (On the current body style truck all the 9.5" axles have 8 lugs and disc brakes. On the previous generation trucks those axles could be found with 8, 6, and even 5 lugs, all with drums.)

The Detroit works nice, it locks up great. Yeah, it does get some attention in parking lots. Definately worth the money and fun to drive!
