Default Truetrac LSD installation tips?

I'm planning to install a Truetrac LSD in my truck over the next week or so and was looking to see if anyone had any helpful tips or suggestions for the install. Any info would be most appreciated.

make sure you have a Tq Wrench that torques in both directions. The Truetrac has "left handed" threads.

Measure your backlash and check your gear pattern before teardown. Reassemble with the exact same backlash, and double-check the pattern when done. It should be the same again. This will ensure quiet gears.

I'd recommend taking it to a pro. I took mine to a little podunk shop - a 1 man wrecking crew who specialized on rear ends. The guy did an amazing job. Installed the OEM 4.10s and trutrac for $250. I felt like I got a great deal on that.

Thanks for the tips guys. As far as taking it to a shop I really would prefer to do it myself and am pretty confident me and my buddy could do it. Don't know anyone that could help me that's done it but like I said I I'm confident it'll work out. I've done all the work on my truck except the supercharger install and don't especially like the idea of having anyone else work on my truck unless it's necessary.

Sounds good Mangled. The Truetrac should come any day now and I won't be putting it in for a week or so. That should give me more than enough time to be sure I have everything I need for the install.

You'll need an inch/pound (I think..from memory) torque wrench to set the pre-load.
I did mine myself.
I have another to install in my 14bolt next week.

Your going to love the truetrac. If you are not changing gears this is a easy install because your pinion depth is already set. Like stated above put dial indacator on gears prior to tear down and record backlash about 8-12 thous. on a used gear is ok maybe even a little more. if you use new gears they will tell you what to set the backlash engraved in the gear. Mark all components even shims, axles, bearing caps ect. I use a flat file and make two straight lines for right and one straight line for left in all parts caps and shims. Pay attention to the way the shims are turned they will have a tapered and flat side. If in doubt take your time and mark the components and cell phone pictures are great. MISSION CRITICAL NO CAPS or anything else gets put on wrong side upon reinstall. Make sure you use a slick oil to press the carrier bearings on this IS ALSO MISSION CRITICAL or you will have to put more pressure on the truetrac that ness. take your time clean everything. USE a TOURQE Wrench when tightening carrier bearing caps and tighten in steps all to 35-40 then you final desired tourqe. AND REMEMBER LOTS OF GM 1/2 ton pickups have left hand treads in the ring gear so dont ring them off going the wrong way. Most of the time the old carrier shims will work but have a install kit and a dial caliper on hand incase they dont fit with the new carrier. GOOD LUCK
