Default transmission advice

Hey guys,

ive got a 2000 ecsb, anyways my 5.3 (z71) has got about 160k, and my cousin has got a fresh 5.3 and tranny (auto) with 50k... first off whats a good deal for that tranny/engine?

i plan on putting in a cam, headers, and tune.. thats about it... will that tranny be good enough? i really want a 5 speed, is that at ALL Possible? let me know some options with prices, used, ect...

let me know im relatively new and im learning a lot everyday on these threads...

thanks

I guess you could sell yours & get your cousin's w/ 100K less miles than yours. Unless you're seeing problems with your motor, I'd just assume use the 160K one (JMHO). You'd be surprised at how well the vast majority of LS-based blocks hold up. I had a connecting rod fail @ 111K, tore the motor down, and found that 7 of 8 cylinders were as perfect as the day the block came off the assembly line.

As for the tranny, I think you'll hear the majority of people telling you to get a "built" tranny for a bolt-on application. The 4L60Es (in stock form) just don't hold well. A 5-spd swap has been done. Someone will post more info on that.

Good luck!

hey thanks for the reply... yeah it was my dads truck... and i know for a fact that not 1 mile was driven harshly on it (or the tranny)

Hopefully someone can chime in on the 5spd swap price, etc?

how much is the engine / tranny worth with 50k? or tranny alone?

also on the 106k? engine/tranny? any money there?

thanks again

If your gonna swap the tranny out anyway and you want a manual, I say go for the 6-speed T56... Just run what you got for now it should hold up long enough to save up some money and round up the part needed. Here is some info on the T56 swap.

As far as values I don't really know. I would guess the 50k engine and tranny should go for under $2000 and you might be able to get $500-$1000 out of the old stuff. I could be way off tho I haven't really shopped around for an engine so that's just a guess. Check on ebay and see what comparable stuff is going for that should give you a decent although probably high estimate of value.

The truck in my sig has 165k miles on it... i put a STS kit on it about 10k miles ago..

Its been driving really hard for the last 70k miles by me, and towed wayy too much. I run it pretty hard every other day. . but the fluids are changed when it is time.

These engines are stronger than they are given credit for..

The only thing i see that could happen to your truck is the Trans might take a dump on ya in the future. but if you change your oil and filter reguraly.. i dont see why you couldnt get another 160k miles out of it.

If you are goin to go through the trouble of doin an engine swap, you might as well go with a 6.0L. Thats what im goin to do if i ever have any trouble out of my poor 5.3L.

And a T-56 would be nice in your truck!!
